Tony Bechara was born in Puerto Rico in 1942. He came to Washington D.C. in his late teens and studied at Georgetown University. After completion of his B.A. degree Bechara felt uncertain about his future plans and decided to travel for a period of time. Ultimately he arrived in Paris where he stayed for a year, studied at the Sorbonne and took advantage o the rich cultutral life of that city. At the Louvre Museum, Bechara recognized Francisco Oller (1883 – 1917), a Puerto Rican painter and one of the few artist of the Americas to be represented by a permanent work in the Louvre.
