This subject is reproduced from the etching on paper by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin, Circa 1770. The Engraver was Nicolas Delaunay (France, 1739-1792) . Pierre-Antoine Baudouin was the son of Michel Baudouin, an engraver of little note. He was born in Paris in 1723 and became a pupil and imitator of Boucher, whose younger daughter he married in 1758. Through Boucher’s influence he was elected an Academician in 1763. His drawing of ‘Hyperides pleading the cause of Phryne before the Areopagus,’ hangs in the Louvre. Baudouin executed idyllic and erotic subjects in water-colours and crayons, but painted but seldom in oil. He died in Paris in 1769.
