Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1920, and raised in Warsaw, Poland. He was the son of the Yiddish poet Melech Ravitch.
Bergner immigrated to Australia in 1937 to escape anti-Semitism and studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne. He served in the Australian Army during WWII.
Bergner left Australia in 1948, traveling through Paris before settling in Israel in 1950, initially in Safed and later in Tel Aviv.
His work often explored themes of human suffering, resilience, and the experiences of marginalized communities, influenced by his memories of Europe and the realities of his surroundings in Australia and Israel. He was also inspired by Surrealism and the writings of Franz Kafka.
Bergner designed theater sets and costumes for Israeli theaters, illustrated books, and was awarded the prestigious Israel Prize for Painting in 1980.
